Women have struggled throughout history to control their own bodies in societies and cultures with a patriarchal structure. What grips me about this interview is Emma Jarrett’s resolute desire to maintain her choice over what would be done to her body, even in the face of life-threatening cancer. I recall very well the terror that she describes at her first oncology visit and the need for the information and the plan to be laid out slowly and in a manner that centers the patient’s desire. The question that she so much wanted someone to ask her was, “what matters to you?”
